Purpose This study applied the Heritage Place Lab (HPL) research-practice teams methodology to identify missing cultural values and/or oversubscribed natural and assess impacts on sustainable conservation of Okavango Delta World Site. The authors found that elements are often overlooked owing limited inputs from trans-disciplinary cross-stakeholder perspectives conservation. may explain why majority African sites List in Danger “natural” designations, as an absence is linked exclusion people and, therefore, gives rise conflicts access use. During 2001 and 2002, blood smears from 37 of 120 fishes belonging to 10 species captured in the Okavango Delta region of Botswana, were found to harbour trypanosomes. These trypanosomes displayed differing staining properties, were morphometrically variable, and ranged in total length from 29.5 to 80.8 microm. Mixed populations of the smaller and larger trypanosomes were found in most fish exa...
متن کاملModeling Concepts and Remote Sensing Methods for Sustainable Water Management of the Okavango Delta, Botswana
The Okavango Delta is one of the world’s most fascinating wetland systems. The highly dynamic flooding forms the basis for a multitude of different ecosystems and plant and animal communities. Water scarcity and economical development lead to an increasing pressure on the ecosystem. A hydrological model is being developed to help making management decisions more sustainable by simulating possib...
متن کاملThe Release of a Captive-Raised Female African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) in the Okavango Delta, Botswana
Wild female elephants live in close-knit matrilineal groups and housing captive elephants in artificial social groupings can cause significant welfare issues for individuals not accepted by other group members. We document the release of a captive-raised female elephant used in the safari industry because of welfare and management problems. She was fitted with a satellite collar, and spatial an...
متن کاملVariation in assemblages of small fishes and microcrustaceans after inundation of rarely flooded wetlands of the lower Okavango Delta, Botswana.
Water extraction from floodplain river systems may alter patterns of inundation of adjacent wetlands and lead to loss of aquatic biodiversity. Water reaching the Okavango Delta (Delta), Botswana, may decrease due to excessive water extraction and climate change. However, due to poor understanding of the link between inundation of wetlands and biological responses, it is difficult to assess the ...
